Montgomery is the famous author of the Anne of Green Gables and its sequels, all set in Prince Edward Island, and locations within Canada's smallest province which have become literary landmarks. The books found success immediately which gave Montgomery life long success and an international fan base. In 1935 she was made an officer of the Order of the British Empire. Lucy Maud Montgomery was born in Clifton (now New London) to Clara Woolner Macneill Montgomery and Hugh John Montgomery. She lost her mother to tuberculosis when she was nearly two and was raised by her grandparents Alexander Marquis Macneill and Lucy Woolner Macneill. She dreamed of becoming famous and wrote poems since childhood. She went to Prince of Wales College and Dalhousie University and had a teaching license. She married Ewen ("Ewan") Macdonald and they had 3 children.
