The actual document was not signed until August when Benjamin Franklin signed his name along with the fifty-five other representatives of the thirteen colonies. Franklin was famous for his investigations into electricity and for writing "Poor Richard's Almanack". When he was 11 years old he invented swimming fins. It was his first documented invention. As a scientist, he was a major figure in the American Enlightenment and the history of physics for his discoveries and theories regarding electricity. As an inventor, he is known for the lightning rod, bifocals, etc.
